Dvojjazyčná, zrcadlově tištěná antologie uspořádaná americkou badatelkou Lisou Peschel obsahuje divadelní texty napsané a inscenované během druhé světové války v terezínském ghettu česky a německy píšícími Židy z Československa a Rakouska. Autory veršem i prózou psaných her, kabaretů a písní tragického i komediálního typu byli renomovaní i začínající autoři, osoby, které válku přežily a pokračovaly po ní ve své umělecké dráze, i ty, které v koncentračních táborech zahynuly, prakticky neznámy širšímu publiku. Kniha obsahuje například díla Felixe Porgese, Zdeňka Eliáše a Jiřího Steina, Leo Strausse, Hanse Hofera, Georga Kafky a dalších. V reprezentativním výběru jde především o texty dosud nepublikované (ve srovnání s dosavadním německým výborem Und die Musik spielt dazu editorky Ulrike Migdal a edicemi známých děl jako je dětská opera Brundibár), jež badatelka dohledávala v archivech a u pamětníků. Nový je rovněž obsáhlý poznámkový aparát antologie, založený na rešerších a rozhovorech s bývalými terezínskými vězni, který umožňuje osvětlit četné narážky v textech ve vztahu ke každodenní realitě ghetta a zpřístupnit tak díla i dnešním čtenářům a divadelním interpretům. Kniha překvapivě živých textů vychází s pořadatelčiným historickým úvodem a zasvěcenou předmluvou někdejšího terezínského dítěte-vězně Ivana Klímy. Jednotlivé texty přeložili Dalibor Dobiáš a Michael Wögerbauer. Diese Anthologie enthält Theatertexte, die während des zweiten Weltkriegs im Ghetto Theresienstadt von deutsch und tschechisch schreibenden Juden aus der Tschechoslowakei und Österreich verfasst und inszeniert wurden. Die zweisprachige, in Spiegelsatz gedruckte Edition wurde von der amerikanischen Forscherin Lisa Peschel herausgegeben. Die Autoren der Vers- und Prosadramen, Kabarettstücke, tragischen und komischen Lieder waren renommierte und erst beginnende Dichter, von denen einige überlebten und ihre künstlerische Laufbahn nach dem Krieg fortsetzten; es sind aber auch solche unter ihnen, die in den Konzentrationslagern umkamen und einem breiterem Publikum unbekannt blieben. Das Buch enthält Werke von Felix Porges, Zdeněk Eliáš und Jiří Stein, Leo Strauss, Hans Hofer, Georg Kafka und anderen. In dieser repräsentativen Auswahl finden sich vor allem bisher unveröffentlichte Texte (die nicht in Ulrike Migdals Edition „Und die Musik spielt dazu“ oder in Editionen bekannter Werke wie der Kinderoper „Brundibar“ enthalten sind), die die Forscherin in Archiven und bei Zeitzeugen wieder entdeckt hat. Neu ist auch der umfangreiche Anmerkungsapparat der Anthologie, ein Ergebnis von Recherchen und Interviews mit ehemaligen Theresienstädter Häftlingen, aufgrund derer viele Anspielungen auf den Ghetto-Alltag geklärt werden konnten. Diese Erklärungen machen den Text dem heutigen Leser und dem szenischen Interpreten zugänglich. Eine historischer Einleitung der Herausgeberin und eine Vorwort des Schriftstellers Ivan Klíma – der selbst als Kind in Theresienstadt war – eröffnen die Sammlung überraschend lebendig gebliebener Texte. Die Übersetzungen stammen von Dalibor Dobiáš und Michael Wögerbauer. This bilingual Czech-German anthology presents eleven theatrical texts—cabaret songs and sketches, historical and verse dramas, puppet plays, a Purim-Spiel, etc.—that were written during World War II in the Terezín/Theresienstadt ghetto by Czechoslovak and Austrian Jews. U.S. researcher Lisa Peschel has selected the texts from newly discovered or little-known works located in archives and in the possession of survivors and their families. The texts include previously unpublished works by recognized artists such as Dr. Leo Strauss and Hans Hofer as well as by authors who remain largely unknown—for example by Georg Kafka, a cousin of Franz Kafka. Each work is introduced by an essay about the author(s) and the context in which the play was written and performed, and the texts have been thoroughly annotated in collaboration with survivors of the ghetto to make the works accessible to today’s readers, educators and theater artists. The book begins with an insightful preface by Czech novelist Ivan Klíma, who was imprisoned in the ghetto as a child. The texts were translated by Dalibor Dobiáš and Michael Wögerbauer. Publication was made possible thanks to the generous support of the A ustrian Fund for the Future, the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, and the Institute for Czech Literature.
